Having a tough time deciding between a Nikon 35mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.8.
I really want to buy a new, sharp prime lens, nothing too expensive to have some fun with. I want to try my hand at street photography (going to be doing at school soon as well) so I think from that point of view i'm looking more towards the 35mm, however I don't want that to be it's only use.
Well the 35mm on your camera will have an effective ff focal length of 52.5mm - a standard portrait focal length also used by many street photographers (though many tend to go wider than this, few will use anything closer), so I'd definitely vote the 35mm.
35mm all the way for street shots. I wear mine out. Until I got my 85mm I used my 35mm quite a lot. Now I switch between the 2 when I want to use a prime.
I have owned both lenses, I now only have the 35mm f/1.8 Both are razor sharp lenses. RAZOR SHARP... one more time RAZOR SHARP. The 35mm works better for multi-purpose because it is a little better for portraits indoors, I agree with the previous comments on it's use... the 50mm is solid, loud when focusing and every bit as sharp but I like being able to start at 35mm VS 50mm and use my legs to zoom. The 35mm is on my D300s right now, and always is... it is my all purpose lens because of the aperture capability, and portability... it's silent, light, extremely fast and has so many uses. The only thing the 50mm would offer over the 35mm is if you ever plan on going full frame you would be able to use it FX no problem, where the 35mm is DX.
So in short, get the 35mm f/1.8 right now, slap it on your camera and enjoy the sharpness and f/1.8 capability!
I've both and 35mm. is much better. On your camera is like a 50mm. on a full frame. If it's not a problem to spend almost twice the price of a 50mm., well no doubt, go and buy 35mm.
The autofocus is faster, less noisy and the images are really good.
Thanks for your advice on this guys, been a great lens so far. The 11th photo I ever took with it has just made the main image on the county's newspaper as the best image in a competition so far, and I've got a photo on here that's on a 6.4 at the moment!
Awesome, enjoy that lens it's one of Nikon's Best IMHO. I just got a good circular polarizer for mine and did some family portraits with it outdoors, amazing results. While on that topic... make sure the very first thing you have if you have not gotten it allready is a clear filter to protect that glass :)
