lol I am FAR from an apple fan boy but you might want to get a better source for the compare..... Good grief.
Fire is certainly an option but IMO it's a different need the the ipad.

Figure out what your need is (showing content to prospects or whatever... and check the apps for each that can do that and see what they look and feel like. The extract screen size of the ipad would be a big benefit (although as the things says it's heavier :-) ).
fire is small it's made more for reading. the web pages will blind you even when you enlarge them which is a constant pain in the butt. don't get me wrong i love my fire for reading books and some surfing but i'd get an ipad if i could afford it cause theres an app for kindle.
Ill take it in a little different direction, as a former iPad owner and current Motorola XooM 4g owner... I can tell you that the XooM is with me more than my Macbook Pro, and more than my camera. It's wifi/3G/4G capability... dual core Nvidia Tegra processor... internal 32 gigs + 32 gig memory card*s* + usb host capability + tremendous battery life + flash + amazing speed make it impossibly awesome over the iPad and most certainly the Kindle. I have full resolution shots in a huge gallery that I can whip through and zoom into no problem with dual core Nvidia processors... moe ram also than all the other tablets. I love my Xoom :) Just wanted to make sure you give it a fair shake, as it's a heavy hitter over the *better advertised* tablets. I have folders of PDF documents, WOrd documents, photos, movies, music, etc... all run, edit, work, etc can be done from this tablet with the use of the many apps you can download.
Can you use that to drag camera cards and transfer to an external drive?? Cause I have been playing with a netbook for some travel but I have a laptop.... if I could get a tablet that can do that in a pinch I can grab an external drive and it would work (speed is not that critical as I would be doing it end of day).....

The Acer Iconia A500 has very similar stats to the XooM, but is a wee bit cheaper. Walmart has it listed for $348. My husband has been eying the Iconia since Christmas, and today we're going to go get him one. We've been waiting for the online prices to drop, but they haven't budged even with the announcement of a newer version coming up.
I'm an iPad 2 user but did look at the Zoom. At the time a particular software program I wanted was only out for iPad soI went with it. Currently Costco has the zoom at a pretty good price, can't remember exactly but 4 something. I'm thinking of buying one for my wife. Only thing that may interest you is to see if the iPad 3 ends up with a new screen you can't live without. But I don't think you can go wrong either way.
As for the Fire I don't think it would work for a photographer. Their version of Android is pretty limited.
I have a Asus Eee Pad Transformer and it rocks! i have a friend that have the ipad and loves the display from my Eeepad.
I think that in ergonomics, usability and features is the only tablet that can really porform at leas as good as the iPad, withought beeing stitch to Apple and itunes.
Damn I never seen the ASUS Transformer pad before now Nuno... that thing is bad ass.. I stand down on my XooM then... I would go for that!!! Multiple USB ports, card readers, that thing is sweet.
Kindle fire is really aimed at consuming Amazon content, be it books, audio, video... but isn't really a fully fledged tabled like the iPad2.
in all honesty i think i like the kindle touch better than the fire just because of battery life when your reading a book. kindle fire has horrible battery life!
i have a 16gb toshiba thrive. the a great tablet. expandable storage being key.
the only downfall is it run android, which IMO, flat out sucks. as a media consumption and games it performs admirably but the minute you try to "do" anything you realize how much you miss a laptop.
i cant even post on this message board due to the delay in typing, and web browsing... well if i could figure out a way to get it not to default to the mobile version of all the sites, that would be really nice.
not an apple guy, i'm holding out hope for windows 8 to show us the way...i guess thats what i get for thinking an advertising company could write or even incorporate their stolen code properly.
Kindle Fire is very nice. I love the overall size...and the quality of the screen is great, but it's not really the same as the iPad in what you can do. It's mainly good for content consumption. iPad I believe has a lot of software which really goes beyond consumption at this point. And the bigger size, and availability of external keyboards, would be a big advantage for data entry.
PLUS: no mic and no camera, make a big difference. Mainly disappointed that it therefore doesn't support Skype. No way to plug in a headset either (headphones yes, headset, no). No GPS.
As a consumption device, it works great...great for books. Magazines are probably better on a bigger format, but for stories (like the NY Times) it works great.
If the iPad3 fixes the flash issue, and comes in at a lower price, it would tempt me. Though while I would appreciate the bigger size in use, the Fire can be carried around anywhere in a jacket pocket. Great for someone like me who doesn't have a smart phone.
ETA: If you are buying it to read books though, the regular kindle has a better screen for reading. This is the usual IPS style screen.
I don't Skype, and would feel a prat holding up a big screen to take a photo, so the no camera and no microphone would not be an issue with me. I think that the Ipad would be more like a mini laptop, is that correct? And I have a laptop that I travel with (mind you that sucks too editing on that thing)
I do like the idea of having something that I can stick in my pocket or backpack though.
I admit, I am so totally thick when it comes to anything computer like. Only just realized that I had a camera phone about 3 months ago, and I have had the phone 4 years. SO that tells you why I am asking all these insane questions.

Since Adobe have now abandoned Flash on mobile platforms, that ain't going to happen. The push now is for HTML5 and I give it only a few years before flash has all but died on the web, never mind on mobile devices.

This is all true, even Microsoft is switching to HTML5, however while we are waiting the next few years to pass we need Flash. I continually get frustrated on my iPad 2 when reading news stories where links to videos don't work, email links fail and web page visits don't run because of lack of Flash.
if you're looking to simply do model releases, all you need is an iPhone or a Droid to run ApplicationGap's model release app. i haven't bought it, but probably will...
