Okay, so I have a finalist in an online photo contest. One of 30 final images from many hundreds of entries. The big prizes will be awarded to a few winners selected by a panel of qualified judges. That's fine. Beyond that, the "People's Choice" winner receives prizes and recognition and a publishing in a periodical. That award is based on votes from the public. That portion of the contest is the reason for my rant. I'm pretty sure what the magazine organization wants me to do is contact all my friends and acquaintances and have them visit the link, register and vote. I suppose that's a fairly effective way to gather contact information for their marketing effort. But, isn't that an awful thing to do to your friends.
Therefore, I'm not going to pander and impose on my friends here at DPC. While I'm sure many would help me and I'm sure DPC has more excellent photographers than anywhere else, it's an imposition on my peers which I will pass by. Yes, I won't win the "People's Choice" awards because I'm not aiding and abetting the magazine's marketing effort. I have a dark horse chance at the panel selected portion. |
