I am pretty much convinced this is not a myth but a fact... specially in US and specially at night times.
People are getting bad votes, start voting low because of anger and that causes anger to others and do the same thing. Since DPC is a US site for the most, people are waiting for the voting start at late night, probably sleepy or whatever, get more edgy after they see the low votes. One low vote triggers to an avalanche of "I'll show you people" attitude.
... I think it works more downhill than uphill. Received good votes cause people to give their more "honest" votes than handing out higher votes.

By the way, even though I get that urge sometimes, I just close the lid of my laptop to control my anger and NOT to vote with that kind of feeling... and walk away for a while.
Nice point, Joe. However, I would like to add that knowledge of theories of like nature (and also unconscious and conscious bias) are the reasons that most contest won't allow participants to vote as they KNOW that it effects the end tally. However, as everyone has to deal with the same handicap it probably works out in the end--at least as far as photo placement goes. LOL.

There may be some validity to this concept. I usually cast a few votes before I even look at how mine is doing, then hold off a day or two in order to make sure I am voting fairly. I do think I tend to be more generous when mine is doing well, but if I am feeling resentful over the voting on my own entry, I'll hold off a while or not vote at all.
That shows a lot of self-control that most people don't have... That's one of the reasons I prefer not to vote on the challenges I participate... Avoid the "moral dilemma"...

I don't really care any more. I am amazed people who have been around DPC for a while still do.

Yep. I'm sitting over here in my unmanned aerial drone bunker dropping bunker busting vote bombs on all the third world challenge entries and I don't give one rip about any collateral damage!!!
And Congress didn't even vote to declare my authority to do it. I am guilty of international vote crimes against photography!
I think I might even crack open the Bible just to make it even more intolerant!
