Guy in my area on Craigslist was selling his pretty much brand new 5d Mk ii he says he bought at Best Buy. He wanted $2100. Says he was going to get a 7D instead.
I saw the ad and offered to trade. Told him I'd give him my 7D, $250 cash, and a 430exii. He said ok.
Should I do the deal? And if so, what should I look out for and how should I make sure the 5D is legit?
One suggestion I have heard is to not have the camera or money on you when you meet first. Find out if it is legit then you can grab the camera and cash. And as Kelli said do it in a public place. I sold my iPad on there and got a few scammers but it was all fairly safe and I met in public first.
I would require that he show me a receipt from Best Buy for the camera. I wouldn't want to be trading for a stolen camera. I think it's relatively unlikely that someone with a stolen camera they were unloading would be willing to trade, so that's likely a legit deal. The terms seem fine. Do follow the usual precautions when you meet him, including bringing along a menacing-looking buddy. That should cover the bases.

Well, if he'd stolen it from the store or a truck or whatever, he'd have all that :-( I'd just hate to find out, when I took it in for service, that my serial number was on a stolen merchandise BOLO list.
The differential seems too much. I'd be suspicious. He could easily get enough cash and then some from the sale of the 5D MkII to buy a brand new 7D with a full factory warranty. So why would he do this deal?
