And some have nice lighting, shadows and composition, but the voters spend 5 seconds looking at it saying it just a photo of an ordinary object. Take 30 seconds to look at it, ALL of it. You may be surprised that it's not just a snapshot of an ordinary object!
Danny sorry to say that is all you usually get. Most votes are based on WOW factor. You can take a technically incredible image but if it doesn't have WOW in it, it will get passed by. There are a lot of photo's to look through and the people here looking aren't art critics for a living. They have jobs, families, hobbies other than photography and other commitments. Most can only spend a few seconds on each images due to time constraints.
Moral? As I have learned this week. Know your audience and either A) shoot accordingly knowing that your subject must knock em dead in the first second (WOW factor) or B) Shoot images that are equally as good but take much longer to impact because they lack a direct WOW.
I think either way is fine as long as you don't really care about placement in this competition. In the long run it isn't about winning or losing, it is about taking great photos...

Please try to not give away information that will give away which entry is yours. I realize you didn't give the title, but describing your shot can also give it away. While it's definately not encouraged, Some people harshly look down on giving away your entry, and may score the shot lower simply because it was talked about in the forums.
The best way to have done this, would have been through a Private Message, so everyone else didn't know as well. You can edit your post if you wish, to avoid any problems.
