I know this is short notice but I'm thinking about traveling up to Glacier Gorge Trailhead for a sunrise photo shoot. Then hiking on down to The Loch lake. My plan is to meet up at Glacier Gorge just before sunrise on Saturday 31st. If any Colorado DPC'ers wish to go, I would love to have some company!
I'd love to, but that's a little too far for me. I believe that there is someone trying to coordinate a DPC get-together for the State Fair coming up though.
As much as I would like to go...working all weekend. So, if you get injured and have to go to the hospital and they send you back to Loveland's ER...look for me (after 6pm), I'll be there!

Should be less crowded too! I also found someone to go with who has a cabin up there! So,,,no getting up at 3am to get there by sunset. (:

Should be good to go, I just did a 6 mile power hike up at Elk Meadows in Evergreen on Tuesday. Six miles in 2 hours. Of course I had to stop and take some photos at a couple of places. Not a bad pace if you ask me, and I didn't fall and break anything.
If everything goes well, you should be seeing some pics by Friday eve!!!
Well, I made it there and back without any injuries!
Sure glad I got up there early, 4 bus loads of people were just coming up every half hour by the time we were heading out.
As you can see, I found out that sunrise is a little different at that altitude. Its already pretty light out by the time the sun hits the peaks in the area we went to. Still I'm pretty happy with the the photos I did get.
Here are 4 out of 45 that turned out good. Only had time to process these 4 so far. So, here they are.

I wish I could sneak my butt up there around 4am on 8/1 (just into RMNP or near Longs) to catch the full moon going down and the sun rising. BUT I AM STILL WORKING! AAAAAARRRRRRRHHHHHHH!
Bad thing about some of the areas in RMNP...too many people. Good everyone gets a chance to enjoy it.
I am trying to plan a trip back into the St Vrain Glaciers (ya been back there?). It is a good 6+ mile hike in and probably an overnighter, but looks like some great photo ops in there. I went in a little ways one day (pics soon), but my 4x4 did not have enough clearance for one section (at least I did not want to be stuck there by myself), so turned around. Almost rolled my truck on the way out. Was during the Balance challenge, but I could not leave my truck like that and risk grabbing the shot. hehehe

Nice work Olympian, let me know if you plan on going on future hikee! I live in Fort Collins, but I wouldn't mind driving over to Colorado Springs or anywhere within a couple hours of here.
Thanks Brian, I will let you know. My next trip will be to the Royal Gorge area, but it will be a wife and kids thing! Maybe in a couple of weeks.

Beautiful shots. Have ya tried the trail from Bear lake to Lake Haihyia (Sp?)above Dream & Nymph Lakes. Its about a two miler and views are spectacular and the lake color is unbelievable. Also, another nice hike is the Cup Lake to Beirstadt Lake from either Moraine Park or the next valley south. Let me know when you go the the Royal Gorge, I know lots of side trips from Canon City. Van

Nope, this was my first hiking trip to the park. I went with a guy who lives in Estes and he knows the area pretty well. I suggested the Loch & Mills Lake trails and he thought that would be a good first trip. We are planning a trip to the Twin Sisters next and that is kind of a precurser to a Lawn Lake hike, which I hear is pretty tough, especially through the Alluvial fan area.
Well, the family and I are going to go down to Manitou Springs this coming weekend. Gonna visit the Cliff Dwellings early morning, North Pole in the afternoon and then finish the day off at Seven Falls.
We postponed the trip to the Royal Gorge because we heard it was kind of expensive. I would love to hear of any side trips though for future reference.
Wait until September or October for the Gorge trip, they usually have a free Colorado day. Residents of Colorado get in free. I'll keep you posted on the date.
The Lawn Lake hike is great too. Haven't been up there since the dam broke though. Is assume it is back to somewhat normal. I've hike almost every trail in the park in the 60s & 70s, when my brother was a ranger there.
The kids will love the North Pole, and want to stay the day.

Sorry guys! We are getting ready for the Fremont County Fair, and I seem to be putting in 40 hours/day (I'm a parent, 4-H leader, and on the Fairboard). Fair has started and I'm taking a breather before I start spending my life out there Wednesday.... You're all welcome to come down and experience the REAL southern Colorado ambience. Most of the animals come in Thursday for weigh-in, with judging starting on Friday. Just let me know if you're coming and I'll give you the grand tour. (oh yeah, we don't charge an entry fee for visiting our fair.) The livestock sale is Sunday and it's a big event for the kids. It's fun and there are lots of other neat things to photograph around here - including Royal Gorge (you CAN photograph it from different points which do not require paying the entrance fee). I'll talk to the folks out at the Gorge to see if they have some special deals coming up. Rafting is still going strong too for those who like those whitewater shots. Oh, and we do have the occasional bear in town for those who like wildlife. Deer hang around most of the time too. (& remind me to tell you the mountain lion in the Abbey story sometime....)
