Drum scans are certainly going to get all the detail that's there to get... but the cost will of course be prohibitive, and you still won't get 'round all the defects that are there. It's certainly possible to do a flatbed scan, and get very good results. It's also possible to set up a backlit situation and photograph them with a DLSR, and this works surprisingly well. The disadvantage to the DSLR method (also not possible with the majority of flatbed scanners) is that you can't do infrared dust reduction, which is possible and quite effective with a film scanner.
You might try having a drum scan done of one of them. Pick one that has some defects, and see how well an infrared cleaning pas will clean them up. Try capturing the same one with flatbed and DSLR methods, and see how that compares.
