I am heading to Vegas next week. This is an annual trip for my business, so I have done all of the strip/downtown things. I will be arriving a little early and want to take a short day trip away from the town. From looking so far, I am thinking either Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire. I am looking for any recommendations on which one to pick (or if you have any better ideas) and to see if there are any specific spots that I MUST see while I am there.

I am arriving at 1pm on Wednesday and do not need to start working until 2pm on Thursday, so I am thinking about getting up early and hopefully getting to a beautiful location around sunrise for some awesome photo opportunities.

I've seen both and I would recommend Valley of Fire.

We went to Vegas last November and did all the touristy things along the strip, spent 2 nights at the Grand Canyon (north rim) and then did Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire.

We went to Red Rock Canyon first and were amazed. In fact I thought maybe we didn't need to go to Valley of Fire after seeing it. But we did go the next day (only an hours drive) and I am so glad we did. It's much bigger than Red Rock and the road winding through the rocks is just spectacular.

Actually you might have time for both! Red Rock Canyon is very close to downtown, you could do that one day and Valley of Fire another day.

I have horse backed through red rock and hiked valley of fire. Valley of Fire is on my short list to return to, Red Rocks is not. If you go to Valley of Fire, stop at the Rez store where you make a right. It should still be the same as it ever was. We bought fireworks inside and shot them off outside in the parking lot (A good time was had by all). If you have the time, leave Valley of Fire via 169. There are a few places you can drive down to Lake Mead/Virgin River and there are some spectacular views. You can follow that back around to Vegas, though it is the longer way and you come in from the east.

Have a blast. It's beautiful country.

Thanks for the advice. Since receiving your responses I have decided that I will try to do both of them. I arrive in Vegas at 1pm, so will head to Red Rock Canyon for the sunset that day and get up and try to be in the Valley of Fire for Sunrise the next day. Who needs sleep.... right?
