I came up with what I thought was a really cool idea for our annual office Thanksgiving cards that we send out to all of our clients and that was to photograph each employee (4 of us) with our spouse and dog(s) and do a layout for the front of the card. The boss loved the idea but I just found out that our receptionist, who is very overweight, is dreading it. She is so sweet and the lifeblood of the office so I really want to end up with images that she feels good about. Does anyone have any ideas on photographing very overweight people in flattering ways? Her husband is pretty small so it might be difficult to hide her behind him. Any thoughts or samples of flattering images you've taken would be so very appreciated. Thank you!
I agree that the light will help. Use "narrow" light, meaning that the side of her face that closest to the camera (I assume you won't shoot her straight-on) should have some shadow on it, leaving only part of her face well-lit. That slims the face. I usually also try to light from high enough so that any extra skin under the chin won't be illuminated because adding light and shadows in that area emphasizes it and usually makes it look worse than it really is.
The other best help is to flatter her with compliments and tell her she is beautiful and that she's doing a great job in front of the camera. Keep the mood light and make her feel gorgeous.
I could be wrong...but I believe shooting from above people (so they have to look up) also slims them a bit? At the least this would make any double chins disappear.

I think a common technique for a "team" photo is to group the people in a tight oval and shoot down while standing on a stepladder. Heving them look up at you both stretches out and hides loose skin below the chin, which is probably the feature most suggestive of someone being overweight; having them in a tight cluster minimizes body size, and largely eliminates any problems with height differences among the group members.
