It is possible that there are (still) some programs which can "place" a TIFF file but not a JPEG.
I would just batch-convert them all to TIFFs and don't worry about it* -- be happy they want your photos. If you save them with the LZW compression option enabled they should be about the same size on disk as best-quality JPEGs.
ETA: If you can go back to the edited images from which the JPEGs were derived and make TIFFs from them, that would be best. Otherwise, just convert the JPEGs.
*You don't want to get into a tiff with a radio reporter (sorry!).
