Precisely. As atmospheric turbulence changes, the quality of the image changes, rather rapidly. What he did was to acquire several hundred frames, then cull through them to find the sharpest (this is done using automation), then stack these "good" frames using specialized software (Registax) to both reduce noise and increase detail. This workflow is common in planetary photography.
