Yesterday, my Internet was intermittent and if on - very slow.
At one point I check the router and it was unpowered. Messed about with the cable and it came back to life.
This morning it's dead.
I buy a new router and configure it - on the router's admin page it reads downstream speed at about 6Mbps - about right.... BUT Internet is still glacial, (0.1MBps using a speed checker).
The modem is ADSL type - wireless is off. The only thing connected to it is an Apple Time Capsule that runs the wireless network. All other devices connect wirelessly.
I tried switching on the new routers wireless function (without any security) and tested speed again. No different; high downstream speed - low real world speed.
Connecting to a neighbour's wireless network gives me normal speed. They are with a different ISP.
Do you think this must be the ISP's issue? Looked at their status page and they are reporting normal service...
are you using the same, single wireless device each time? does the problem happen with multiple wireless devices? could be some obscure setting on your connecting device that isn't in synch with your router, but is in synch with your neighbor's
Check if your landline is working, this very thing happened to me a few months back and it turned out to be a fault with the cable, my landline had no dialtone.
Apparently of the two wire pair, ADSL will still run, albeit incredibly slowly, if one of the wires is faulty. Mine turned out to be a fault at the junction up the street.
Any storms in your area lately? If you've swapped modems and computers I'd see what else you can swap or eliminate, namely cables or wall jacks. If the problem continues, it would have to be on the ISP side.
