My wife and I are trying to plan a quick week-long vacation somewhere during August and I'd love to hear any ideas on scenic places that are both fun and relaxing. We've thought about going overseas, but there's not really enough time to do it affordable, now thinking about taking a cruise in Alaska but Princess cruises in the week we need to go are all booked up...where-o-where should we go?
In lieu of Alaska, why not go to Greenland? I'm serious! Also, Iceland Air has some nice vacation packages. Last I checked they even had extended weekend packages. Plus, what better way to experience the midnight sun?
Personally, my biggest regret leaving FL was that I never got to the Keys. I lived in FL my entire life, but never went to Key West or anything. Snorkling in the Keys and Caribbean is supposed to be amazing!!!! So, if you are staying in the States, I'd recommend the Keys/Snorkeling, because I would want to go.
Also, you might consider Lake Tahoe. It's my favorite place in all of the US (so far). I haven't been to Yellowstone or Yosemite yet, but I LOVE Lake Tahoe!!!
But, one day, I am going to go to this place I saw on the Travel Channel. The water rises in the day, and you can boat through it, and in the evening and morning, you can walk through that same area. It's a beautiful rock formation on the beach. It might be in Maine, but I am not sure. I have been looking for it ever since. What do you and your wife like to do? Perhaps go to some of the bat caves of the Carolinas or KY!

Another option is the Banff Springs Hotel. Same kind of setting just 30 minutes from Lake Louise.

That sounds like the bay of Fundy inbetween Nova Scotia and New Brunswick right beside Maine, It has the larges tides in the world.The whole area is beautiful!

How about a round robin. Pick out one dpc person in a state/city you think would be nice to visit. Fly there. Then find another one nearby and rent a car to drive there. Fill up your week traveling from one dpc person to another, taking pictures of their towns and enjoying their company and then fly back home. The wife might get bored but you'd have a great time.

I worked on the island during summers for several years and I would have to agree. I would say longer than three days and you'll start to become very bored.
I suggest Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia. This is known to be one of the best scenic drives in the world and by many, the most beautiful place in North America.
It would help to know where you're starting from. I'm only familiar with the East Coast. A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway makes a great (and cheap) photo vacation. Along the way there's the Cherokee Indian reservation, Craggy Gardens, Mount Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, various waterfalls, caves, wildlife hikes, panning for rubies in Franklin, etc.
Others in this thread have suggested more spectacular places you could visit, but the only real cost on the Parkway trip would be gasoline and a hotel or B&B along the way. Some attractions may charge a small fee.
You could try a drive around the coast in the Great Lake State of Michigan. Thousands of miles of coaslines and the most lighthouses in the world. Not to mention dunes, the Big Mac, Macinaw Island, the Yupe (can't forget the Yupers eh?) Sault Ste Marie and the locks...
If you are on the west coast, I would recomend either of the following:
Drive along US Route 1 and then over to Yosemite
or
Grand Canyon
It is really hard to beat the national parks in terms of vacation value: absolutely beautiful and reasonably priced.
A trip down US 1 (starting in SF and heading South and then over to Yosemite) is a great way to spend a week for little expense. You get beautiful ocean views, interesting towns, some really open spaces, and a great park at teh end. My wife and I did it before we had kids. Since then, we've literally been all over, but that was really great.
Grand Canyon was also good, but it might not entertain you for an entire week.
Actually we're starting from northern louisiana (but we're originally from new orleans). The biggest problem is that we are planning alittle late in the game to get good airfares and additionally the trip is only for approx. 7 days + 2 for travel. It's amazing how much we seem to have in common! I'd love to go to greenland, iceland, banff (was looking online tonight), talked about lake louise, been to napa (want to go to oregon), etc... SO MANY BEAUTIFUL PLACES!
please don't beat me though. alaska seemed booked up unless we wanted to get back home at about 4 in the morning and have to work the next day at 8. Anyway, long story short, we're probably going on a cruise so I can scuba and explore belize, but I have heard that belize is absolutely gorgeous. My wife amanda seemed really happy with the choice so I think I'll end happy with it too :)
