Hi, I'm fairly new to this and am a bit scared to do lots of changes to an image for fear of suspension. Can I submit spot colour for advanced editing? Its the stripes comp I am thinking of. Any help gratefully received thanks
I do however, feel a need to point out that selective saturation is rarely appreciated here or elsewhere. If you're going to do this you'd better make darn sure that no-one is sure that you did it.. (make it subtle...) Unless, of course, you don't care about score and just want to do what makes you happy... Then de-saturate away my friend! :)

Until we have a challenge topic of "Selective Saturation". Then all the people who think it's cheesy, gimmicky and low vote such things will be trying to ribbon with the technique.
I will also add that if you do a desaturation you must desaturate the whole and not part. I'll try to explain...as I don't know where to look for the photo's that got Dq'd - which I'm sure someone will know where to look and will add to this post
lets say you have a portrait that you are desaturating. but want to make the picture look like you are applying lipstick to the lips therefore only part of the lips have color while the rest is waiting to have the lipstick applied...this particular picture was Dq'd.
there was also one that someone used a paint brush (small one) and was painting the color in - that too got Dq'd
you either have to do all or nothing with the subject/object for desaturation (balloon, lips, rainbow)
I recently did this picture but I was very careful to get all (or as much as I could see) of the brick colored rather than only "part" of the brick
further, be careful not to create new areas nor shapes, or that will result in a dq
so this was Dq'd because you put the frosted "overlay/mask" (for lack of a better word) I'm not sure why this is considered new areas/shapes????
because by desaturating in the shape of a rainbow ...well, created the illusion of a rainbow that wasn't there before. a new shape.
ok...so dumb question...why couldn't you have done a gaussian blur and erased to make the shape of a rainbow? This is one that I still have a hard time "clearly understanding"

Yep, it can be confusing... think about it this way. It doesn't matter how you do something, only what you do. So if you create a rainbow shape, you are likely to get DQ'd, because you have created a new shape in the image that was not there before. It matters not how you achieved it.
