I would also recommend a localized increase in contrast. Sometimes, creating a broadly-feathered selection, then just bringing in both the black and white points will make a big difference. Otherwise, you can always use an "S" curve to raise contrast just in the mid-tones. Which technique works best depends on the image. I've used both together as well.
