I just scored a birthday present from my wife....got an f2.8D Nikon Micro(macro). It has a working focus of 2 inches to infinity. I had this lens years ago and sold to get my f2.8 zoom.
Got on ebay for about half price of a new one on BHphotovideo.com. Coming with a UV filter and brand new metal lens hood.
The only problems I've ever had with this lens was that if you were shooting macro on a really cloudy day...or late in the day and needed to be less than 5 inches - the lens would block some light. However, with my D700, I may be able to shoot 5-7 inches and then crop for a HUGE effect w/o getting to that 2 inch point.

My recent bugs entry was done with a tube on my 70-300 Tammy. It got me to within about 18" using a lens that normally has a close focus distance of 4 feet. I think a 100mm 2.8 is still going to be on my wish list, but it's not a priority purchase.
