I've just returned from a trip to Vietnam.
Great trip.
I paid this guy $50,000 dong for a photo.
I thought it was worth it as he was in a rice paddy, riding a water buffalo with a calf.
Then later in the day I paid this woman $20.000dong for a photo. She didnt have a water buffalo so i thought that was fair.
Then i stole these for free
People here must have some stories of their own, lets here them
I paid a cousin $5 to go stand on a hill on a farm and try to look inconspicuous for a Where's Wally challenge ... the farmer later told me it was a favourite haunt of brown snakes (a popular poisonous snake in Australia).
I'll usually give a $2-$5 tip to the regulars at the FW Stockyards for taking some pics. For many of them, like Wild Bill, this is their living or a bit of extra retirement income. Except the guy who is dressed up as an indian. He's obnoxious with the manner in which he requests demands tips, so I never photograph him.
Added. I think the most I tipped was $7 for this shot, which is what he charges for a shoeshine, hence the title:

But now i see that that is not the case! :) I hope you had fun in Vietnam! I have never had to pay someone for their picture! but i have stolen quite a bit in seattle :P
I have not paid anyone for a photo, but just wanted to say that I like your "stolen" photos a lot better than the posed ones. They appear more natural and you get a better sense of the scene when they are not aware that you are "stealing" their photo.
I made the mistake of telling my 5 year old "I'll give you a dollar" when he was reluctant to let me take his picture. Now it costs me $1 for every pic, for him to eat his dinner, for him to go (the f*ck) to sleep - pretty much everything. Now I have to borrow money from him for the mortgage payment and that sucks because he charges insane interest rates.

Yes it was a great trip, full of OMG moments when you see what the locals carry while riding their motor scooters.
Worst moment was realizing I had left my camera bag on the baggage trolley while at the air port coming home. It was of course gone minutes later.
Lost in Vietnam 1 x Canon 450D, 1 x 24-105mm L lens, 2 x spare battery, 2 x 8gig sd cards.
No time to leave the air port to find a police station fill in a report as we were about to board the plane leaving the county, so insurance may be problematic with out evidence of a crime.

Ughhhh! That sucks! Well, you can make a movie about going back to Viet Nam years later to rescue the equipment that was left behind. Get Chuck Norris or Stallone to play you. ...oooh, or Charlie Sheen! He's not doing anything and you could probly get him cheap.
