When I went to my usual source to get a new SD card they only had SDHC cards and couldn't tell me if they'd be compatible,(department store). I was asked how old is my camera (Canon Power Shot SX10IS) and I said about 4 years old (it's actually only 3) and it was like I said it was really old. So, is it okay to buy the SDHC?
You may have an issue with whatever card reader your using (unless you direct connect via camera cable). I have a couple older card readers that read SD fine but can't handle SDHC. My newer laptop has a built-in card reader that works fine as well as a newer card reader I have now.
The original SD card standard went up top 2 Gb. Anything higher than 2Gb requires a device that supports SDHC. SDHC support is pretty standard now, The Powershot S5 I used to have supported SDHC, and that was your SX10's predecessor. I did buy a used Kodak at a pawn shop for my grandson this afternoon and it only supports the original spec SD cards. A 2Gb card still holds almost 1000 JPG images for that camera, so it's not really an issue.
There is also a newer specification, SDXC, that tops out further than SDHC. That's only an issue if you get above the 32Gb mark.
If anyone with an older Fuji cam is following this thread, I downloaded a software upgrade for a Fuji A900, previously only SD capable, so that it could work with the SDHC cards. I suppose that many of the other brands have software upgrades on line in the manufacturers support website.

They are rare but there are 4gb SD / non SDHC cards. They came out right before the SDHC format was introduced. I have a couple made by Transcend.

I went on line to the Fuji website, support page, and downloaded the upgrade software (free). By the instructions with the file, I connected the camera, with fully charged battery, to the computer with a usb cord, and just followed the directions.
Bear in mind that if you buy locally, you'll almost certainly pay too much. You can get 4GB class 10 cards for $10 shipped, and I've even seen some 8GB versions go for that much. A few months back, I watched someone at a register in front of me pay nearly $40 for a slower 2GB class 4 card. Ouch.
