Well, that's not accurate anyway, though. Currently we have member challenges showing up on Mondays and Fridays at midnight, and an open challenge on Wednesdays, for a 2/1 ratio. It used to be members on Monday and a pair of "exclusive" opens on Wednesday — meaning you could enter one or the other, but not both. Additionally, there were sometimes "extra" challenges, usually for members.
Anyway, it used to be a 1/2 ratio, now it's 2/1: and what this means, in practical terms, is that registered members can enter one challenge a week, same as always, but *paid* members now have 3 a week, up from 2 a week, since they can enter the open challenges also.
When I first joined, in late 2004, it was 1/1 BTW... The two "exclusive" opens happened to manage challenge size when there was a spike in challenge entries and the single open challenge was becoming unmanageably large.

I think your math is off a little bit Bear. It used to be that on a weekly basis, members could enter 2 challenges (1 member + 1 of the 2 open) and non-members could enter 1 of 2 open challenges. This is a ration of 2:1. Now the members have 3 opportunities each week, with 2 member challenge + 1 of 1 open challenges. Non-members have one chance each week, 1 of 1 open challenge. This is a 3:1 ratio.
