As promised in this thread, the Site Council has reviewed the rules on EXIF data. Based on this review, we have made the following decisions:
1. Effective immediately, IPTC data has been ruled as acceptable for proof requests. If you have a camera that does not support the EXIF standard, but records the date using the older IPTC standard, this is acceptable for submission.
2. Effective for all new challenges announced on or after September 1, 2004, all challenge submissions must come from cameras that record EXIF (or IPTC) information as part of the image file. While we will continue to accept proof under the old standard (EXIF data not required for cameras that do not record it) for all challenges announced on or before August 31, 2004, this will no longer be the case for future challenges.
As always, all images must contain the date and time the image was captured in the EXIF data. This date must be within the dates of the challenge to which the image was submitted. If either of these conditions are not met, the image will be disqualified, even if it is obvious the recorded date is not correct. Attempts to forge, falsify or otherwise alter the EXIF information for any proof request will result in suspension.
If you do not know whether your camera records EXIF data, we recommend checking DPReview for information on your camera. The "Uncompressed format" field will typically indicate if your camera stores EXIF information. If you are still unsure, please post to this thread, and include your make and model of camera. You may be contacted by a member of Site Council for a sample image if we need one to make this determination.
Many thanks for the thread ! I have a Nikon Coolpix 4300 anf I have read in the DPReview for this camera : EXIF 2.2 . I'm still not a member (just registered) because I am not sure how to be able to submit EXIF data if required (in case I participate in a challenge).

Hi mambe, all you have to do is keep the original image from camera untouched on your hard disk, not even rotated, at most only renamed, and if some day they request the "exif proof", you just have to send the original image to them.
If you should lost this original file, no other touched one will do the job, as EXIF data is "degradated" or even lost when you modify and save the image.

Mambe... When you submit proof, you simply submit the original, unedited image file that came out of your camera. This will contain the EXIF information we need, and we will extract it.

Because when you are found out you will be suspended or (more likely since you are obviously premeditating this) expelled from the site.
There are plenty of other sites where you can enter any photo you want ... why would our little electronic ribbon be so valuable to you as to compel you to cheat, both us and yourself, and ruin everybody's fun?
The essence of our sites method of operation relies on photos being taken within specific dates. If you don't want ot play by that simple rule, please take your ball and go home :)
While I'm disappointed in the final decision (_not_ in the people who made it! :D ), I can certainly understand the difficulty with which this decision was made by the site council.
I guess my little Dakota will just have to be for random fun and not for challenges.
I can change all dates in EXIF data and file very easy. How DPC can prevent this :)
Several users who wondered that and have tried it are serving or have served lengthy suspensions. We will not tolerate willful cheating.

....Furthermore....if someone does decide to cheat with an illegal picture, they're not only cheating everyone on DPC, they're cheating themselves! What fun is that?? :) I for one LOVE this site and I love it just the way it is.....rules and all! One of these days I'll get up enough money to actually become a member.

Only a member for a short while.Love the site and the people are Great.
I am the type person who don't like to get in trouble or mess up things. So here is a question.In short it has been answerd but I need a straight answer.I up-loaded a photo today for the open challenge.I resized my photo to be in the stats with the rules.In turn when uploaded the exif info is missing.Because of the resize and name change.
If I keep the original that has the exif and is about 3mb in size on my computer.I'm ok right? That way if they have a problem with the photo I can email the original,Right ?

Perhaps the admins can make a special allowance for any non-EXIF photogs who can present a pure shot from camera which includes in the subject field of view a newspaper showing the date! It just means that all your challenge pictures would have newspapers in them prior to cropping. :)
