just curious if anyone has made some custom filters to get different effects? Or held different items in front of the lens to get a unique look. For example, I just watched a video of a guy take a UV filter and apply some vaseline to get some really neat looking photos.
I don't, but the Vaseline on the filter or lens is a common effect used by many. It's been around much longer than digital cameras going back to the days of film.

Don't put vaseline directly on your lens unless you want that lens to be your dedicated soft focus lens. Vaseline is a huge PITA to remove. Put it on a cheap UV filter...same bang, less fuss. Personally, I prefer using some kind of cellophane or a mesh over the lens.

I would never put it on a lens, but that's not what I was saying. I was merely mentioning that the effect of putting Vaseline on a filter or lens is nothing new, and that people were doing long before the digital age, and long before the screw on filter came about as well. Back in the day people had no choice, but to put it on their lens if they wanted to experiment. Today, it would be unwise and foolish to put it directly on a coated lens when as mentioned a cheap UV filter would be the better...and smarter alternative.
