I hiked the Inca Trail in 2005, and it was one of the highlights of my life. I didn't even have an SLR back then, but took thousands of photos. A couple of things from a touristic point:
Take it easy - you're at altitude and it takes a couple of days for your body to acclimate. Unless you live at altitude, you might get really sick.
Don't eat large quantities - this is tough because the food is fabulous. But at high altitudes, your digestive system slows way down, and you'll be suffering from serious gas pains if you do.
