one thing that I think would greatly improve this is a noise reducing filter...DeNoise would get rid of the banding on the little blue/purple pillow in her hand, a bit more cropping on the left as much as you can to get rid of the chair. JMO...
I can't help but to want the whole head of the girl in the photo ! Strange...but it's hard for me to look at !
Very much agree with that. Feels like I'm missing the best part of the scene.
I also like he blur idea, that's creative and fun.
I went with a more natural looking idea (very quick, as I didn't have a ton of time to play around). After cropping (the bottom of the image adds nothing for me), I used Topaz DeNoise to take out the noise. then some minor adjustments in Aperture to reduce the saturation, pull out detail in the shadows, and add a slight vignette to highlight the right side of the photo more.
ya never know, & Art R might yet show up for the full godzilla showing...

I'm all thumbs-up on the halfheaded, bird-flipping demon child. I think she's absolutely bizarre. I love her to distraction.
I wanted to have some fun here and do something different than my usual. Looks like MinsoPhoto and I took it in the same direction. I thought there was too much going on, and the color on top of that distracted. I have to agree with Bear as well that only seeing half the girls head makes it a bit bizarre, but keeps drawing you back in. Almost as if the next time you see the photo you expect to see the rest of her. LOL.
Anyway, a teaspoon of this...half a cup of that. Some grunge and grain added, some vignetting, so selective focus and blurring etc.
I was disappointed that you cut/cropped the little girl's head off so I had to improvise to get it back. I also preferred a more familiar subject to that other partial child.

So, I guess the consensus is reducing distraction in the photo & cropping a little tighter... Feel free to add any more if you like--the different processing has helped see different possibilities... Thanks too, dcnutter
OK, so here's my editing so far. I've put in a slight lens blur alpha mapped to the room, cropped a bit tighter and turned it to B&W.
I'm wondering if I can play with the light to heighten the sneakiness of the shot... I've tried darkening the edges a bit, but I don't think that's getting it where I want it to go...
I noticed that most of the other editors have cropped out a fair amount of the carpet in the foreground, but that you kept it. What is it you like about all that room that has nothing but texture to it? There is no right or wrong, but does it serve a purpose for what you are trying to say in the image?

great observation. I am a chicken-butt about the possibility of over-doing editing I suppose. Only reason I've kept the crop wide is I'm a bit fixated on a 4x6 aspect ratio :-). I figured I can always crop more later.
Thanks too for the duotone suggestion... It's made me think of going a more vintage route to the B&W... we'll see...
