Hello Everyone,

Outdoor portrait with or without flash? I'm talking about portraiture shots in the shade in daylight. I read that many professional photographers use flash to achieve smooth and bright skin.

My next question. I'm taking family portrait (a married couple with one young son around two or three years old) at the botanic garden. I only have two lenses: Nikon AF-S DX 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 ED VR and Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. If you were in my shoes, which lens would you use most?

As for using flash in those settings... it is totally up to your style. Some love using flash, some don't. One problem that people often have when not using flash is that they have backgrounds that are much brighter than the shaded faces of the subject, meaning the background becomes very distracting. Checking ahead for suitable backgrounds can help this, and knowing where in the sky the sun will be.
As for which lens... I'd definitely go with the 50. Sharper and will have better bokeh, plus less depth of field.

I just did my first outdoor family portrait session using a flash. I'm no pro but I like how they came out. Here's a link to them. The 50mm is the one I'd use.

edit: spiritualspatula pretty much summed it up.

2nd edit; If you have a weak stomach don't look at the last page. My son is in the Army lost a couple of fingers.
