So, when I went to my computer and clicked gmail, I get a message that says 'there has been suspicious activity' and they wanted me to confirm that I was the actual user. This is right from Googles pages. They ask for my phone number and seconds later I get a call with a code to reactivate my gmail account. Anyone else get this?

That method is used when an account has been compromised (hacked), used to send spam, and locked by Google to stop the spam and (hopefully) protect the account from further damage. Getting the verification code is the best and fastest way to recover your compromised account. See: //www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=69a33682180a6d01&hl=en

Yeah, you can also monitor where/if other IP's were used to access your account. Look at the bottom, where it says "Last account activity:" then click on details and you can see where has been accessing your account. Typically if your account has been compromised it will have been via phishing.
