Who would not give THIS PHOTO a 10 in the open challenge? This is a tossout but I'm curious to see what kind of reaction it would have gotten. Comments welcome... especially harsh comments..

Perhaps you would be immediately reminded of a colour test - maybe in Dpreview?? - maybe technically perfect in exposure and composition but lacking in interest - would want to hang this on a wall?
I would have give it 8 or 9. The background is almost white. It is #F8F8F8 (R:248 G:248 B:248). I would liked to have seen it white. The primary colors on a computer are Red Green and Blue but "analog" primary colors are Red Green Yellow. But who gives a... :)
I tried to place the Crayons somewhere else in the frame but in the end I liked them just where they are.

I'd probably give it a 9...technically great but there are a few very minor imperfections (I think so anyway). It seems like this was meant to be some sort of sureally perfect image. If so, the crayon labels should be perfectly lined up (the green is rolled forward more from the red/orange and the blue even more so) and there should be no knicks or other imperfections on the tips of the crayons. The reason I think you may have been going for perfection is that you seem to have gone through great pains to make sure that the crayons were staggered evenly. The reflection of light off the black stripe in the green crayon is 'imperfect.' Pretty ridiculous criticisms but that's the only 'harsh' I could come up with.
As far as subject matter is concerned, it doesn't appeal to me very much but I can see that it might to some.

Those are not rediculous criticisms.. those are what I was looking for and you see the same imperfections that I do. I bought 6 boxes of crayons and could not get a R,G,B perfecty crayon out of the whole lot. The uneven rotation is due to the imperfections on the tips. I tried to get the tips reflecting the light as nicely as possible. I think I could pull this shot off with perfect crayons.. lol

I would have given number 1 an 8 and number 2 a 10. Number 1 is nicely done, but I like a stronger subject in most cases. Number two is phenomenal for sure :)

I think your crayon pic is great, but wouldnt have gotten a 10 from me. I like more color. This looks like a magazine ad.(Which is not a bad thing). The other crayon photo you did through the drops of water is awesum and difinately a 10.

Arnit, Both great shots - I'd like just a little more room around the bird. It's cropped a little tight for me. The color & clarity in both shots is ideal.

I'm pretty new to this, so don't take my comments too personally, but I would have given it an 8 or a 9 because technically speaking, it's a great photo but it's not exciting enough where I would hang it on my wall.

thanks for the comment... It is not really intended to tell a story.. It's just a simple still life. I used it as a test to see if I could successfully photograph a still life situation on a white background. this has been a huge weak spot for me, simply because I haven't spent much time playing with the concept. I like the photos I have seen here done on white but haven't done much of it myself... :)
Technically, You have it mastered John. This picture of crayons is just missing a little pizzazz. I just set up a “out-takes” page for the “Free Study” challenge. (This is my first attempt at a web page). OK, this is really bizzare Jim. Remember how our last submissions to the "transparent" challenge were using the same technique? Well, check out markers which was my #2 choice to submit for this challenge. Eeeeeeeerie!
