No names, but there's this one user who I decided I don't like. Their comments are smugly narrow-minded. And they are one of those people who says things like "this is a poor photo" instead of "this photo does not appeal to me". My next submission I will be certain to ask them in advance not to comment on my photo.
My English teacher always told me not to write "I think..." or "In my opinion..." whenever I was writing something that was obviously my opinion, and I think it'd be safe to say that can apply here. I also personally prefer the non-sugar-coated responses anyway. That's certainly not to say I don't prefer the ones that offer suggestions for improvement... just I'm not sure how necessary it is to get so irritated by one person's style.
I feel differently. There is certainly such a thing as a photo being underexposed or out of focus, no? When a person tells me that the photo is out of focus, that is acceptable, regardless if it was intentional or not and how it effects their vote. But if I am told (in this case I was not) that my photo was badly executed, it's an opinion of me, not the photo.
It's clearly an opinion, but there is a difference between commenting on the caliber of the photo and the caliber of the photographer.
Nothing online ever gets under my skin. I've been desensitized from bad manners online since 1995. I post these types of threads because I think there are some very fresh personalities on this board. The replies I read, although diplomatic, are refreshing.
i agree with you about some people's responses, and your strong response is a reaction because you take great pride in your photography which is commendable. i thought i had a really good photo this week, but it turns out i was way off. you just can't please everyone and you shouldn't try

Here is what set this thread off. I feel that photos are a medium of expression. Occasionally a photo will communicate with me. Well, I was enjoying one on this board and I read this harsh comment about it... and I was like, what the hey! So I started following the person and their comments are pretty bi-polar.
No biggie. I just wanna stick my tongue out at the suckah!
Comments like, "This is a bad shot." are worthless to the point of being ignored. Tell me why and perhaps I'll agree. That happned in the current challenge. One of the comments made me take a second look at the picture through his/her eyes, and I'll be darned... (S)he is right! It would have been a much better picture. Then again, usually I just know better than the commentor.
My favorite was last week. One person hated one I did, and loved the other. Go figure.
Then again, if I actually thought I had talent, I might feel differently.
