No call this weekend and I want to go do some photography, but I can't find a place to go. The coast has a high chance of rain which usually means the sky will be an ugly, homogenous gray. The mountains still have snow and no foilage. Everywhere is a two hour drive and I like to know I'm not going to get there and get skunked.
My uncle used to live near Leaburg, up the McKenzie River Highway out through Springfield. There is a salmon hatchery, which had (a few years ago) a 7-foot or so sturgeon in a separate pool, in addition to a gazillion tiny salmon. Just a short way upstream is a small dam which makes a lake -- at the top of the lake is a covered bridge.
A few miles farther up the highway there are some hot springs, a short hike off the road. Sorry I can't be more specific about the location, but I ws only there once, long ago, and I wasn't the driver. They start out kind of high up on a hillside and work there way down a rather steep slope, so I was thinking you might get some good angles to get steam risimg off the pools into the cold air.
You could also go to a museum or practice some studio work if you don't want to get wet. :-)

Go over to Newport, Coos Bay, places like that. You can shoot waterfront scenes in really gray, flabby light and then pep 'em up and they look wonderful. Bright sunlight's actually a disadvantage in those places.

Yes. I've been there. A possibility, although there isn't a ton of deciduous foilage yet. The trees are really only starting to bud.
Grab your 300mm and go shoot some birds in flight. You can go out to some of the island reserves along the columbia river.
I know! I wish though. I sold the 300mm last year in anticipation of getting a 100-400 at some point. That point hasn't come yet unfortunately. I can try the 180mm macro with the 1.4x to give me a 260mm lens with a really slow focus ring. That might be a frustrating experience. :)

Only problem with the 100-400 is that by the time you've got the pretty little bird sighted, focused, the bird's in the next county. I have tried, mightily, with this lens, and eventually go back to the 300.
Good news! Sunday morning is down to a 20% chance of rain and is partly sunny or mostly cloudy. That is a world better than it was before. Looks like I'm heading to the coast. Unfortunately sunrise is at a very low tide which sometimes puts the water below the various rock outcrops, but it may reveal other opportunities.

Well, find anything good? I'm headed to the coast this Friday for the weekend. It's a big family gathering, but I'm still pretty excited to get out of town and do something. I've been to this section of the coast (Yachats, etc) so many times. I'm hoping you went somewhere interesting so I can check it out too.

I agree, sometimes too much sun can hinder. You can get more wide-opened aperture, Bokehs, with less sun. I have to use a Variable ND filter to do that in Bright-Sun. Get a Kata Rain cover for your camera. Rain, fog, make great/excellent backgrounds for brightly colored and/or lit foreground subjects. Snow and Ice can be very "Cool", too.
