I think a Wacom tablet (any size) will make your job much easier. Get a decent flatbed scanner with at least 1200 dpi optical resolution (2000+ would be better), as high a density range as you can (should be more than 3.6-3.8), and preferably with the ability to capture 48-bit color.
I do all my retouching on separate layers, leaving the original intact so I can always reference those pixels. I put separate parts of the retouching on their own layers so it's easier to make adjustments or move things around, and if there's a mistake it's easier to "start over" on a section without throwing away too much previous work. |
