I like the response actually.... He did get lucky they were easy to track down. I have my book sitting in the amazon box (not I was not one of the 200 or whatever that got a download :-) ) - just have to get some time to read thru and play with some eTTL cause it's frustrating the odd times I try to use it..
I haven't bought the book yet. I figured it was "canon-centric", but recently heard from a friend that it is 60-75% generic, with only the front portion being mostly dedicated to canon speedlite operations. I have heard it is a terrific book. So it is on my list to get. I know a couple of canon shooters (I try to socialize with people on the 'fringes' :) so they may be getting copies as gifts for birthdays, etc.
I'm in the eBook business and only a fool would sell unencrypted PDFs and expect to maintain control of distribution.
Of course what was done is wrong, but he's gotten a bit twisted with it by hunting her down through various social networking sites and broadcasting this fact. It's put me off any interest in what he's got to say to be honest.

Encrypting PDF's is some deterrent, but it won't stop someone. I have an open source application on my desktop that processes and unencrypts PDF files. I occasionally get locked down documentation from my own company that needs corrections and I have to run it through. It works well too.
Possibly, Spiff, but it's certainly a hurdle. From what's presented here he's sold an unencrypted downloadable file. Of course it will be shared.
Edit: My point is there is a cost/reward equation in cracking/distributing it and this material certainly falls below the time/effort it would take to crack the PDF for the typical reader/purchaser. There's nothing really to be gained by cracking it. But by releasing it unencrypted it will be passed around like the freely distributable info it appears to be.
Kind of like the transparent overlay for images on this site. It's not going to stop someone that really wants it and has just a little knowledge, but it does put up a notice that says "This is not free".
