That looks fun, since most airshows are during midday. I grew up on L.I., but it's not near me now and I could not satisfy their "accredditation review".
So basically, only the the best of the best professionals, in their determination, are permitted to attend this event. Sounds like the objective is to build a portfolio of outstanding pro images of their aircraft collection.
I imagine it would look that way. I started this about 5 years ago to see if I can get special access to those who love aviation. The people staying late during airshow are volunteers and they are staying late for us on the busiest day of the year. The idea of submitting 3 photos to the Museum at the end was mine as they give so much to photographers. It is not mandatory but most donate 3 photos. I have never seen the AAM use any images as of yet.
I have airport access and donate all my images to the AAM. I started this with the AAM to allow others access that they do not normally get. It is not the AAM trying to get free stuff as I provide that to them.
I try to make sure that the best return and 6 new photographers who have never been there get access. 12 will be admitted. I had 20 one year but we were all over each other. We keep it at 12
so that it gives us more room.

That makes more sense, with some context behind it.
The easy thing for me is not to do this as I have full access, but being an aviation photographer, The access that I have is beyond anyone's wildest dreams. I want to help others. Limited space is the hard part so I make all the determinations on who gets in. This event is arranged by me and the AAM has a few bouncers to make sure I to not jump in a AT-6 Texan and take it around the pattern! ;)

Thanks Skip, it is lots of work yet very rewarding to see the smiles on so many photographers. It is very surreal being the only people on a very packed airshow ramp and having full access where you can walk up to an F-18 or A-10. It is very quiet out on the ramp as it gets late, Very surreal. 5 years ago I was on top of the world to get that type of access.... This is why I try so hard to make this possible.
So I have to ask, can I come? I was a Navy combat photographer, I was onboard the USS John F Kennedy during the first Gulf war. I have a couple of shots in my portfolio, I would really love to go to this. So please PM me and let me know.

To keep from starting another thread I thought I would piggy back off of this one. We have a local air show coming up here soon and the longest lens I have is my 70-200 and I shoot on a FF. Would it be worth it to rent a 100-400?
I guess it depends on what you are planning to shoot. Most of the images in this thread are static display shots. If you want to capture flying planes, then the 100-400 would be perfect.

I am mainly looking to shoot in flight shots. I have a 70-200 with a 2x converter but I'm not thrilled with the optical quality when adding that. I will also have my 17-40 for any static shots I take. Just wondering if it will be worth the $100+ to rent the 100-400 or if I should just deal with the 2x on my 70-200
go to the store an try a 100-400 and then in the same conditions use your 70-200 2x. Go home and look at the results on your monitor. ONLY YOU will be able to determine if the quality is good enough for what you want. I have friends that only shoot prime 400's and 500's and say anything less is just crap. I think they are out of their minds. Everyone has an opinion and no two opinions will be identical. You need to test both options and make up your own mind on what will work. Sorry I did not have a better answer, this is the only answer I can come up with for you.
