I don't think you really need a macro lens. Many of the images are things that are bigger taken close up. This was taken with a macro lens, but meat tenderizers are relatively big. You should be able to take the shot and then zoom in on a portion. You won't get as small of a DOF, but it would still work.

it will also work with most lens if you have extension tubes...relatively low in cost...and they do an amazing job of getting up close....

Just wanted to add that you don't even need the reverser ring. All my macro shots are just me reversing my lenses hand held. The focus is razor thin, but that has nothing to do with it being hand held. If anything I think I have more control that way. It takes some practice but you can get some nice results from it.

Yep! You just literally press the lens against the body, so that no light goes through from the sides.
And honestly, I have taken some shots where the lens wasn't quite alligned properly, and generally it just causes some white vignetting on whatever side wasn't alligned properly.
I do have to take several shots of a subject in order to get even 2 or 3 that are actually in focus. But that is the nature of the (cheap) beast.

Yeah, reversing rings are awesome. The ones I got were definitely at the low end of that range (got em off eBay, I think). Very easy to set up, too. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get a lot of bang for their buck.
Janine, I would expect you'd be able to hook up your 55mm macro with the 50mm reversed quite easily.

Tape, seriously... Just get the blue easy release painters tape and tape the hell outta them.
