Reading the news cyclone Yasi looks very, very bad, worse than Tracey and Katrina. I was on an island in Whitsundays years ago when a cyclone struck. It was a very horrifying experience. And it was just a small one. This looks so much worse. After all the floods one just can't believe that a monster cyclone could be next! I hope you will be all OK. Don't take any unnecessary risks. Your lives are the most important. That was the lesson I learned from Victorian Black Saturday fires when 173 people died - houses can be rebuilt, lost lives cannot. Go to the best shelters!
I have been in a Cat 4 and it's no picnic. If things around you hold together, it is just noisy and wet, but if the place you are in starts to come apart, then things go very bad very quickly, not to mention the possibility of a huge wall of water coming ashore from the storm surge.

If this cyclone was crossing where I live my house would go under water from the surge (which is expected to be 7 meters above the normal high tide). Seriously scary thought.

You got me curious what a cyclone was so I looked it up. Sorry to hear that you guys on top of all the flooding that has been happening are being hit by a hurricane too.

Just got word, seems Tully has had a bad time of it. Those in Cairns are fine, for now (it passed a little South of Cairns). The winds are still quite strong and will be for the next few hours.

Seriously, I hope that the storm surge is much less than expected and that deaths and injuries are minimum. Take care to avoid any downed power lines or anything in contact with them.
