Quickest way I know of is to download the 30-day free trial of Topaz ReMask. They have a tutorial on how to use it, and it's very straightforward and remarkably accurate.
In CS4, if you have clean separation between product and BG, use the quick-selection tool and just drag it through the white areas. After you've done that, magnify the image and go around all the edges cleaning them up as needed. Finally, invert the selection and copy it, then save it to a new document with a transparent background, is basically how it's done. Let their art people worry about how much feathering etc they need, it will vary from use to use, they just need a crisply-cut version.
