The results of the 'Work II' challenge have been recalculated, due to the disqualification of the former 3rd place image for spot editing (dodge & burn specifically). Congrats to our new yellow ribbon winner!
I don't know what it is, perhaps the complicated nature of the rules, but when I heard it was three first time winners I was 98% sure there would be at least one DQ.
Stupid question and I am obviously not great at the post processing part of stuff, but what is "dodge and burn" and why are they not allowed?
That's when you selectively darken (burn) or lighten (dodge) specific portions of the image by selecting them and modifying them. The words refer to the techniques we used in the darkroom in the film days, "dodging" by holding something between the light and the print, or "burning" by cupping our hands and "pouring" light out onto a narrowly defined area.
The Basic rule set does not allow you to edit only certain parts of the image or "spot-edit" -- any adjustment such as lightening or changing the contrast must be applied uniformly to the entire image.
Dodging and burning refers to lightening or darkening (respectively) certain parts of the image, while leaving the rest unaffected; in digital editing programs this is done with a paintbrush-like tool. Doing it with film and enlargeer was somewhat trickier, and far more expensive ...
These tools/effects are allowed (within limits) in challenges using the Advanced editing rule set.
