I did a volunteer job for a non-profit last year that i posted here.
My good buddy, justamistere was there to help.
When they used the image on a brochure, it had reference to my name in there somewhere.
THey have a very revised version coming out this year -but another image by me on the cover … but no reference to the photog (me)
I'm not sure if having my name on there will ever help me - but should I care?
I say yes. When you do anything for free, often the only compensation is recognition for your work. You don't know who will look at it, want something like it, and more often than not, contact the photog for similar work, or to use the same image.
Absolutely. If they bought the image, then it is only polite to credit you, but if they are using your image without compensation then they are legally obliged to give you credit, since they can only use the image with your permission.
THanks. It's an odd situation because I got the job via a salesman at my day job. Since my day job is the print/prepress house that is printing it, that's how I happened to see the design this year before it was printed.
The proof of the to-print job is approved by the customer, so my request to add the credit may hold up the job - so I just told the sales guy that it is important to me and he's looking into it.
I don't usually rock the boat, but what the heck , I'm important dang it.

You are clearly right... They should be glad you didn't want to be a jerk about it.

Sales guy emailed then- the great lady over there apologized and told me to add the credit. =)

Thanks. I'm trying to think back whether there were any contracts or anything - and I don't think there were. I suppose that would be another factor if there was one.

As the creator of a piece of artwork, you have certain rights from the moment you create that artwork. A contract can modify those rights, but not having a contract does not mean those rights are abrogated. If you make a thing, its yours. If someone takes or uses something that belongs to you without your permission, it is against the law. Thats why you see so many "image used by permission of the photographer" notes. Simply put that note says "he let me do this". They have no more right to use your image without expressed permission than they have the right to use your car without asking.
