Reason being, I borrowed an idea from a brochure that I saw this week. The problem with that is that it doesnt really involve a product. Though I was browsing the old one and saw a few without actual products. I just dont want to get voted low because there isnt an actual product. ARGH.

Taken from the challenge details. I hate to say it, but if there is no product then it doesn't fit the challenge. Sorry. However, if it is the best photo I have ever seen I might still give it an average vote (5 or 6).

What if the "product" is an experience vs. a thing?
And what if the "product" wasn't man made, but was exploited by man for profit. That would still consitute a product because it is being used to make money.
Example being The Beach. I know the beaches along New Jersey [most of them anyway] charge a fee just to go onto the beach. Man certainly didnt make it, but its an exploited, naturally made product.
I think product can be an idea or something you can do and is possible to make an advertisement about. In my opinion the product has not neccecarily to be anyting you can touch or is man made.

Steve, I absolutely agree with you on the voting always being for the "obvious". But what do you think will be considered obvious? A physical object only? Or a little broader? Curious.

If the above photo did that well, then I think I have a fairly good chance. Besides, I have plenty of other photos I could complain about, like my June Free study... someone told me I used too much editing in the computer, when all I did was adjust a curve. Well, you'll see for yourselves =)
i think all the interpretations of the word 'product' are right on however, I think if you wanna win a ribbon, less interpretation & more obvious is the way to go!

Maybe it comes down to this. To some people, the "product" is the steak. To others, the "product" is the sizzle. Given the wording of the challenge, most DPC votes are likely to insist that the steak be in the picture. But others understand that the definition of "product" can definately be expanded.
Suppose, for example, you wanted to advertise a financial advisor who wants to help you have a great retirement investment program. For this challenge, would you have to take a picture of the advisor, or could you submit one of the South Sea island?
I took the challenge to create one great photo that could be used to advertise something. My "something" is more of the sizzle, and not quite the steak, so we'll see. It was fun thinking about the shot in any event.

I wouldn't count on being able to do anything "broader" in any of the challenges and score high. I'm not saying don't do it - personally, I prefer the shots that push the limits, and I often score them well. However, you will not have a high final average.
I'm so sad I just took my entry out of the advertisements challenge since I don't think it would get any good score since it is not a "real" product. :(
Hey, put it back in! You really can't predict the score, you WILL get some feedback, and you just might do well. At the end of the day, so WHAT if you get a bad score? How does that change the rotation of the Earth around the Sun? Put it back in!!!

I am so sorry you withdrew that!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it was superb for the challenge. I personally care much less about scores than producing better photos that will please me at the end of the day, though. Again -- great shot.
