Hi, I'm looking to submit some photos for competition, and see that the max file size i can upload is 300kb.
Can anyone tell me how to resize my pictures. I'm trying to do this in Lightroom 3 by exporting JPEG as maximum size of 300kb, but I get an error message saying I cant do that (not sure why?).
The best I can do at present is resize my image according to pixel length of the photo and try guess how many pixels L x W would give me a file size of 300kb. Way too much trial and error involved!
I use a plug-in for lightroom named "mogrify" here is the link: //photographers-toolbox.com/products/lrmogrify2.php , you also have to install another plug-in if you use windows named "imagemagick" but its all explained on the mogrify page.
I can highly recommend this plug-in as it makes all sorts of things possible when exporting, its a donation-ware product but it really is worth it, give it a twirl & all your exporting problems will be finished.
I am using LR3 too. You need to specify both - resize to fit 800 pixels along the long edge at 72 pixels per inch AND 300 kb as max size.
Thanks, Marnet...I made all the adjustments as you suggested, and it now created the JPEG. ... but when I look at the properties of the file, it is only 32kb. Is this normal?
Mine are between 156 and 292kb. Once you specify file size you cannot change quality. I am not sure why your file is so small.
I can get a bigger filesize if I up the pixels per square inch from 75. Would this have any effect on viewing the file in DPC?
The ppi should have no effect, unless for some reason setting that is resulting in another resizing of the image to very small pixel dimensions. Based on the (very) small file size, I suspect that is happening. Check the resulting image, make sure it is still 800px on the longest side, I'd bet it is not.
Edit to add: I just tested exporting with Lr 3.3, set to JPEG, Limit File Size = 300k, resizing set to 800px maximum in both width and height. File sizes were in the range of 228-277k, depending on image content. Changing ppi had no effect, as expected.
