I am looking to go back to school (preferably online) for a degree in photography. I've read a lot of reviews of the major player and am frankly disappointed in the general opinion of the major player (Art Institute, SCAD, etc...)
Do any of you have suggestions or opinions on available courses or programs?
I'm fortunate enough to have a full time job, so apprenticeships aren't really a viable option. I am learning a lot from everyone here of course, and experience is a valuable teacher as well - but I would like to go further - for me this means having set projects, deadlines and assignments to keep me motivated to reach a goal.
Thanks Caree - I looked them up, unfortunately they don't appear to offer any online courses. Looks like an interesting and progressive program. You should do well there.
I know Better Photo has online courses and whatnot but I have no experience with them. I am curious though as to what you are looking to get out of it? It can be a lot of money for something you likely won't recoup. Why not just buy books and read online and teach yourself?
Sorry didnt think about them not being online.... well they are online but in campus - its a mixed class.
Photography is so hands on I wanted to have the hands on in class.... which is one of the reasons I choose them... because of the mixture. I cant do a full time schedule in person.... especially since Ill be completing my 3 months of my senior year for my BA in education at the same time. LOL
A friend of mine is almost done going to The Photography Institute. I dont know much about it but she seems happy... and its 100% online because shes in Germany (military)
Also I have taken several photography courses at my community college via online --- might want to contact them. Many of those courses transferred to Nossi so maybe you can start there and finish somewhere you like in person when the situation gets better? Or you can get an AA at the community college.

I dont know if this is her case but around here its hard to land company jobs or long term style free lance gigs without a degree. Nashville is flooded with photographers and such. A degree really helps. My other reasoning is I will be incorporated the middle of this year... and actually opening up a business with my SIL. Having the degree makes the insurance cheaper and opens up more avenues.

I have a decent (and growing) collection of books and magazines already and do read and work with them regularly. I love the learning experience here but would like a more clearly defined path or progression to building a portfolio and how to manage and use it appropriately.
Additional research (I research things to oblivion sometimes) leads me to think that even though it isn't a degree program, the New York Institute of Photography may be what I'm looking for.
edit - *side note* - I have a decent collection of equipment (including an amazing printer I really couldn't afford not to buy) but now want to take the next step/
