Yesterday, I was noticing that once again I may get some images without any comments. Instead of complaining, I did the next best thing, and commented on every photo in the free study! HOwever, at the end of that, I still have no comments on my free study entry. So, my challenge to you, if you accept it, is to find my image, and give it a comment. I would feel pretty disheartened if I was the only person to not receive comment this challenge.

Well yes.. it seems it has, and I also think that they don't know me, I also think that instead of maybe helping me they decided to make some kind of statement. Yes I have great difficulty commenting it's hard for me when I don't feel like I'm any good anyway.

I figure your opinion has great value, and I'd love it if you felt good about commenting.. What does knowing you have to do with that? Seriously - it's awesome that you're committing to commenting, and I figured that you'd just be interested in the thoughts your comment spawned..
Honestly though, if you do want to comment more heavily, you probably should try to not worry too much about responses, learn to enjoy whatever people's responses are, no matter what is said, there's absolutely no reason you should "Go back into hiding again"...

I think its great that you've decided to comment on more photos, I've made the resolution to do the same, its not fare that i enjoy so much getting a comment but do not give enough.

I just figured I've finished voting, I won't change the vote, if I don't comment on their photo and they want me to, or at least give them a PM back with my feedback then I'll try to do that.
I'm only at 11% on the free study, it's not been a easy process for me at least. outside of my comfort zone, hehe..

As I see it yes, you can, and sometimes should...
The biggest thing IMO is to never tell the voter/commenter that they are wrong, or imply such... Instead you should simply explain your photo if you wish, or just comment on the comment, but never try to get them to change their vote - that would be unfair (not that them changing the vote is unfair, but that should come from a genuine understanding and appreciation of the photo, not a solicitation for charity...)...
I message commenters regularly, most often if they ask questions about the photo in their comment...

Well you should have gotten a comment from me by now at least seeing that I commented on ALL the entries. Sad thing is that my own entry has only garnered one measly comment. (Post-editing note) I am talking about the bits and pieces challenge here. Not sure if you have an entry in there too,
I do get the impression that enthusiasm and active participation is starting to wane a bit here on DPC. Some people want lots of comments and recognition but are not prepared to set the example themselves. And I am not talking about you here GiantMike as I have received a number of comments from you in the past.

Some people want lots of comments and recognition but are not prepared to set the example themselves.
I agree with this sentiment. If someone does not do their share of commenting, they have no right to complain about not receiving enough comments themselves. By the same logic, if someone has an average vote cast of 4.2, they should not have any complaints when their entry is running at 5.6. By their own standards that is way above average.
