So I mentioned this briefly in another thread but I finally have some time to do something about it.
My 7 year old (bless her heart) broke my brand new canon 50mm 1.8 lens. I just got it for Christmas and had only used it a couple times. I was helping her with the junior photographer side challenge and asked her to get something out of my camera bag and she tipped the whole thing over and my lens fell out onto the tile floor and broke completely in half. As far as I can tell it is unrepairable.
I called Canon to see about warranty, they said it wasn't covered. Anyone else have a problem similar to this? How should I proceed, or is it a lost cause? It wasn't a terribly expensive lens only around $100, but I certainly didn't get a $100 worth of use out of it. Plus, with my husbands recent medical bills I don't know if we have another $100 to spend right now.

You probably can fix it. I did the same to mine. I knew it was just popped apart, but I didn't know the trick to getting it back together. Some tips from Zigomar did the trick. Here's the diagram he drew on top of the photo of my lens with notes and cautions on what to do.
50 mm 1.8 lenses known as very fragile. Even small touch to a hard surface would open them up like an egg. So, it's not your 7 year old's fault, it's what it is. I owned one, and sold it before anything happened to it. I carried it like I am carrying an egg, with multiple bubble-wrap.
I think it can be fixed, and after that i think I heard something that you can just tape it to make it little stronger.
If you end up replacing it, check EBay and used camera gear places for the Series I 50mm 1.8. It is much better built than the current Series II. It has a metal mount, not plastic like the current version. Build quality is far better.
You should be able to pick one up for around $50 tp $60.

Thank you! Thank you! I just fixed my lens! That saved me a $100 bucks! I am still worried about it popping off again especially since it has done it once before. Anyone heard of good ways to reinforce it?
don't know about the rest of the world, but here in Western North Carolina, if you need something "held together, there is just one choice -- duct (duck) tape. :P
You absolutely, positively, never want it apart again?
Two-part epoxy... Sand the surfaces a bit first to add a bit of extra "bite", and cover what you don't want glued together with tape..
It will not come apart (at least not where you've glued it, it might break somewhere else...)
Be warned, two-part epoxy is nasty crap, and it will stick anything it touches together, it will bond with your skin so well that once it's on you, you pretty much need to wait for the skin to fall off....
If you bought it over the web using a credit card - should it not be covered by the card issuer ? I'm pretty sure that I have rerad that that cover works irrespective of how the damaage is caused. I wo;ldn't try fixing it till I had exhausted that possibility in case you do something that invalidates the claim.
Gorilla glue, with it you can take your time applying where you want, maybe with a toothpick. When done moisten with maybe a Qtip or very light mister, that activates and expands the glue. This stuff is tough we use it to glue plastic textures on steal pier forms for bridges and use them multiple times.
