Hi! I'm new here and found you guys due to the whole 'photo laure...something' and 'boulevard of photographers' scam thing. I too submitted a photo, was chosen and offered a book. I did not buy it (though I really almost did). Anyway, you guys seemed nice so I thought I'd try here and maybe gets so tips!
My name is Heather and I'm a 22 year old college kid who's getting married in April. I live alone with only my pup Jack for company. :P I'm a little pathetic and geeky. I hope to be a contributing member to your society^_^
Hiya heather, and welcome aboard. Pathetic, geeky kids are always welcome here, at least as far as I'm concerned. Whereabouts are you located? In general, if you don't want to be specific...
I'm from Eastern Kentucky. I've lived here all my life. :P
And I wouldn't say I got scammed as I didn't buy anything. Just disappointed. I'll post things on here soon hopefully. If any of you guys are deviants I'm there too :P
Glad your joining this community. you'll enjoy it here for the most part. :) geeks and nerds are very welcome. And I'm interested in know about where you are located too. also what your photography style is through challenges! ^_^
more or less yes. :) you can enter your best image of the month or the one you like best. and make sure you took it in this month. :) i should be entering something so I look forward to seeing which one is yours, if you choose to do so.
Not all of them are by month though right? Like do you have 'flowers' or 'animals' or 'landscapes' those kinds of things?
We have a variety of subjects, but you'll always need to shoot the images after the announcement of the challenge. That's part of why it's so very difficult to win around here, you've got to have the timing right!
What I mean are are they all timed? I have some photos I really love that I'd like to get critiqued.
Oh, you can get critiqued just by posting 'em up in a thread. If you pay for a membership, you get a portfolio you can populate. If you don't pay, you have to link to your outside host and it's harder for us to leave comments.

As Bear said, post them up, we'd love to see them and give you critiques..
But, in challenges, yep, they're almost all timed, however, once in a while we do have a challenge that allows for photos from the entire year, and occasionally without date restrictions, but they are quite rare.
Awesome! I'm really wanting to get into photography as more than just an occasional hobby. I am just starting so I'm not expecting great reviews but tasteful critique helps make someone better, right?

Comments on our photos often feel good, but I think you actually learn more from the comments you make on other people's photos. By being able to analyze and articulate exactly what you do and don't like about a photo -- what "works" and what doesn't -- you will be able to take those factors into account as you compose your own pictures.
We also have "side challenges" here quite often, where we can post photos on a theme, and everyone gets to post and receive comments without having to stress about scores. It's a very enjoyable way to get to know other members and their styles.
Once in a while a registered user will post outside links to photos in the side challenges. It's a lot more effort for us to comment on those though, unless we happen to also be members of the site linked to.
Here is a link that you may find very useful as you test the waters here.
The Unauthorized DPC Newbie Guide Anyway, welcome to DPC.
Hi Anoki. You shouldn't feel intimidated. Most of us are geeks. I've met a few of them so I can swear that is true. We also have a couple of cavemen, but I'd stay clear of those :-)
