We're getting four iPhones and we text A LOT. An unlimited family text plan is $30/mo, but this looks like it could save us some $$$ (I'll pay the $6/yr for each phone to remove the ads). It looks like it uses the data connection and you need a separate phone number just for texting.

Does anyone use it? Does it work well? Do you like it? Is having a separate number for texts a pain (especially for teenagers)?

Whatsnow (99c) is a better option if you text a lot - you get to keep the same number. But remember it uses data or wifi - hardly any usage if its text messages without pictures.

Textnow is free and does give you extra minutes of talk time as well - to remove the ads one option is download some apps and remove them if you don't use it. I tried it last weekend and had some issues placing and receiving calls using it, but worked great for text.

ETA : I don't text a lot so don't know how painful it is to use an app to do texting.

Thanks. It looks like that app can only communicate with someone else that using the same app on their phone.

on a side note, does the iPhone automatically use wifi if it is available, rather than 3G?

Yes, but having Wifi turned on at all times does decrease battery life.

Yes, it switches to wifi when available.

Oh I see what you mean about the app.. textnow will work better for you in that case. It does require giving out 2 numbers to your friends and family - one for calling and one for texting. Could be a pain!
Textnow has an option of forwarding the phone calls to your iphone but it might cost you minutes even for someone calling from AT&T.
