I have to agree with Slippy on this one. I too used to shop and it seems I would purchase things that were: The wrong size, wrong colours, wrong styles, not romantic, not personal enough, too personal, not sentimental, too sentimental... and of course being that we live in the country, I would have to arrange for return trips to various stores, wasting yet another day returning stuff and shopping anew.
Fixed all that, I now give the one gift no one returns... they might bitch about the colour (a Canadian thing) but they never bring the gift back.... I give Money... and so far, everyone is happy. :O)
My daughter is right happy this year since I bought her a brand new car as an incentive to get her driver's licence... and yes she passed.
I'm going to email all of my present-exchanging relatives to let them know. I don't know if I should tell dollar amounts ahead of time, or that can be the big surprise.
Personally, a couple of years ago I opted out of gift giving altogether. I don't give anything, and I expect nothing in return. Everyone important knows, and MOST of them are good about it. I still get the odd gift from people that can't apparently help themselves, but I just accept it with a thank-you and remind them of my personal preferences. For me, just being around people is enough.

Just being with family, having fun, getting some time away from work (5:45am to 6:15pm for me) is what I love! If I would've met you before I met my wife, maybe we'd be married right now. Do you have a shapely ass?
