If you have a legal copy of any Windows OS I don't see why you wouldn't get MSE as your anti-virus application. AVG misses stuff. I've tested them both and MSE wins in a big way. Never thought I would tout MS software but here I am doing it. :)
Hmmm, I run AVG on five machines and none had a problem. Maybe they were all turned off throughout the bad update. Stroke of luck.
It does sound like they pulled the update back pretty fast, so it's possible that either your machines were off or for some reason the update did not propagate to them... connectivity lost or user not logged in or ??

I have no idea if this has a bearing on anything, but I have AVG 2011 on 4 machines here and NOT ONE has experienced any problems so far.... and I know for a fact that one of these machines (my daughter's) never gets turned off.
If I read it right (and I read it quickly because I stopped using AVG three years ago), the problem was evidenced when you rebooted. Then you were hosed. So maybe not rebooting before they replaced the bad update was the key.
Personally, I use NAV on my main machines and Avast on older machines that are for testing only. AVG just took forever to scan my machine every night since I have so many disks and so many files!

That was my experience with it as well... also, I was running on my wife's (vista desktop)machine and it would occasionally just stop updating itself, never giving notification that its definitions were out of date. Attempting to update it would fail. We migrated her to a laptop, and that now runs Win7 and we are using MSE without a hitch.
