i am sure this may have been discussed previously, but i searched "basic editing border" and didn't get any relevant results.
here's my question
under Basic Editing, you are allowed to add a border, as long as it is "distinct and clearly recognizable as a border." OK, easy enough. But what about a border that is added such that the border fades in instead of being a sharp line delineation between the border and the photo. it would still be a border, but would it be "distinct" enough.
like this (bottom/right side vs. top/left side)
Or would it be considered a "vignette effect" and get the image DQ'd?

If you have time, pre-submit your photo for validation to the SC. I think the photo you posted would be challenged because the borders are not the same all the way around.
mefnj - Try using edit->stroke and lower the opacity within the stroke dialogue window. Keep the blending normal. This will mellow the border in a general sense ...but I don't know how to do a wispy one in basic.

I cannot give you a confirmed answer either way, but I would assume nothing. If it was my picture, I would submit a ticket with before/after versions well ahead of the deadline to poll the current SC members on the matter.
My personal opinion is that under the current version of the rules this would be an added vignette, and not legal under the current Basic rules.

That was in 2007. I also assumed that it wouldn't be legal (but probably because I don't know how to do it without spot editing. :)

This challenge was right after a rules update. I don' think the border rules or vignette rules have changed since then, but maybe they have. There was some discussion, but it did pass. But like the General says, submit a ticket. But beware, the pre-challenge check with the SC will only get you an opinion or 2. It is not a guarantee that an image will be considered legal or illegal in the actual challenge.
There are too many rules and "the rent is too damn high".
