I am not necessarily taking sides here but I have seen lots of posts asking for votes on various contests, they usually always say which picture is theirs. No one seems to mind. Why is this post any different? Like I said not taking sides, I just want to hear what people have to say, before making my mind up if this is fair or not.

I'm not taking sides either. It's a personal thing. I like h2's photos and appreciate the time he puts into them. I, personally, would not ask for people from here to vote on my images in a contest as I find that unfair, but that's just me. I hope I made myself clear that I'm not in any way saying you or anyone shouldn't vote on h2's images.
A lot of these contests are basically popularity contests. I have seen contests that actually SUGGEST you get all your friends to vote early and often. The goal of the contests is often to increase web site traffic numbers, plain and simple. Whether that's the case this time I do not know. But when a contest IS open to all voters from the outside world (as opposed to something like DPC, which is a closed-voting environment with rigid controls) I just assume that vote solicitation is going on, and it doesn't bother me to see DPCers soliciting support from within their community.

It also doesn't bother me to see people solicit. I, however, don't vote on popular voting contests. So I'm a little of both. I don't agree with them, but I don't care if people partake.
it's still up to the voter to cast their vote whichever way they like, so i don't see a problem with soliciting. besides, he said he'd donate 10 memberships... that's pretty generous.
When rules explicitly say not to solicit votes, then I am of course against it, but so many of these sites expect you to do that, its almost impossible to win if you don't ask some friends.

Of course one could read the rules and quickly find out that it's forbidden, but who does that any more? Did anybody voting for Oliver's shot read the rules before doing so? If not, why not?

Are you referring to DPC's rules? There's the line about not being allowed to vote in a manner that suggests an intent to disrupt the voting system... but I guess that might be a bit vague.
