I'd also like to consider the Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS but I'm not sure I'll need it. What are your thoughts on the plan? This is mostly for portraits/events/and other random creative hobby photography.

It all depends on what youre using it for IMO. My primary focus is portraiture and i do a bit of travel too so i would opt for a 24-70 or a 28-70 instead of a 17-55. but thats just me.
i think that setup sounds pretty sweet unless you like to do wildlife or macro.
the only other thought id have is what wide angle zoom id want (canon 10-22 or tokina 11-16). if you want it for landscapes i cant see why youd need the extra stop (assuming youre using a tripod... a fairly good assumption). if you want it for concerts or something low light like that which would benefit from a wide angle then i would think more about the tokina.
disclaimer: i have the canon 10-22 and have used the tokina. i think the IQ, CA, and distortion are handled much better on the canon but it 1)feels a bit cheaper and 2)you lose a stop.
I think your gear list looks pretty darn good. And better yet you're not pigeonholing yourself into a cropped sensor with those lenses. Some day you may go FX, and those lenses are perfect.
