White Sands NM - DPChallenge Forums

I'm heading up to Ruidoso, New Mexico next week and want to spend some time shooting at White Sands.

Any one have any tips on where to go.. I know, NOT the missle range! :}

I haven't been there for over 25 years, and I"m sure the park structure has changed. Is there more than one access point?

Thanks... (oh yeah,, and when I'm not shooting,,, it's off to the TRACK!!! yay)

Just noticed your signature.. I"m going to an Exhibition of D Arbus' work in Houston in a few weeks.. Can't wait to see her work up close and personal.

I live in Alamogordo and have only been to White Sands a couple of times. There is only one access available to the general public and it is about 16 miles south-west of Alamogordo on Highway 70 (towards Las Cruces). Their phone number is 505-479-6124. Their web site is White Sands National Monument.

They are open 7am - 9pm and have evening and full moon walks, but mostly it's just pay your $3.00 (for 17 & over) to get in (it's good for 7 days) and drive in. Stop where you want and look or hike around. Drive to the end of the road and you are surrounded by the white sands with almost no plants. Take drinks and a small broom/brush to get the sand off your feet before getting into your car. Take a sled, one of those plastic ones without runners.

If you want to continue on to Las Cruces, call the road closure hotline at 505-443-7199 before starting out. Highway 70 is closed 8 miles SW of the monument on occasion for missile testing.

P.S. take lots of money to Ruidoso for gambling and buying a lifesize chainsaw carved bear for your front yard.
